Suicide Prevention
Depression is a leading cause of suicide. If you feel that someone is suicidal
or may be harmful to others, seek immediate help. Call your doctor, go to
your local emergency room, or call 1-800-suicide.
For local suicide hotline numbers in your area, see the Suicide Crisis Center.
Under About Suicide, Facts, read 'What to do if a loved one may
be contemplating suicide' from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Most people are afraid to ask if someone is contemplating suicide for fear
that it might upset the person or cause the person to commit suicide. Suicidal
thoughts are a clear indication that someone is depressed and an extremely
unsafe condition for the depressed person. It is important to ask if the person
is feeling suicidal and if so, to contact your clinician immediately.
