Youth Suicide Rate Climbs
This week September 9-15, 2007 is National Suicide Prevention Week, which means we need to take action especially in light of last week's news highlighting two studies showing youth suicides increased dramatically.
In 2004, 4,599 young people 10-24 years old took their life, the biggest rise in 15 years. This rise follows the sharp decrease in antidepressant prescriptions due to the 2004 black box warning on antidepressants for children.
Families for Depression Awareness strongly urges families to get treatment and to monitor it closely. We offer the Depression and Bipolar Disorder Wellness Guide for parents of children and teens with these conditions and a guide for teens.
