Planning an event as large as Strides Against Stigma certainly has it challenges, but for every challenge we’ve faced, we’ve managed to find a way to work it out. Progress is addictive, and we’ve been fortunate to be continually making progress with Strides Against Stigma, in large part due to the incredible group of volunteers that are helping us plan and execute the event.
So, what progress has been made since our last update? WE HAVE A VENUE!!! We met with the facilities staff from Boston University and they loved the idea of Strides Against Stigma. They granted our application for Strides Against Stigma to be held at Nickerson Field on April 28, 2012! We are so excited to be aligned with Boston University on this inaugural event, and can now throw ourselves into making Strides Against Stigma a memorable and successful event.
Events like Strides are an amazing opportunity for people to band together and bring widespread change to a community. We have been discussing the powerful message that Strides Against Stigma is championing. While Strides Against Stigma is an opportunity to honor the people living with depressive disorders, the people who love them, and those lost to suicide, we also see Strides as an opportunity to change the conversation about depressive disorders. Education about depressive disorders is helpful, but identifying stigma, the damage it causes, and establishing the truth is critical. You cannot “snap out” of a depression, and people who die by suicide are not “weak.” These are some of the common misconceptions that we can address through Strides Against Stigma. But we need your help. Please register a team for Strides Against Stigma, and take a stand against these misconceptions. Together, we will change the conversation about depressive disorders.
