1 in 3 Teens with Bipolar Disorder Develop Substance Abuse Problems

girl_drinkingTeens with bipolar disorder face a number of challenges--misdiagnosis, impulsive behaviors, rapid mood changes, risk-taking. Now a new study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has shown that 1 in 3 teens with bipolar disorder will develop substance abuse problems.

The study also found that experimentation with alcohol was the strongest predictor of later substance abuse.
