With news of another shooting in Texas, there will be continued debate on gun control. We want to make sure that you are aware that President Obama's "Now is the Time" Plan (released last week) covers more than gun control. The Plan includes substantial recommendations to improve mental health services that will help all of us.President Obama's plan outlines initiatives to make sure that adults and children get the mental heath treatment they need, regardless of whether they are covered by private insurance or Medicaid.
Mental health disorders are treatable medical conditions and these disorders appear on average by age 14. The President's proposed actions wisely include early prevention, identification, and treatment programs for youth. The provisions include training for teachers and other adults to help young people.
This plan affirms the work that Families for Depression Awareness has been doing and will continue to do. We offer a Teen Depression Program that enables teachers, parents, and teens to recognize depression in teens and get them help. Through our Teen Depression workshop and webinar, we have trained nearly 2,000 teachers and parents. We receive on average a 94% satisfaction rating and 70% of attendees agree to take specific action steps to help teens.
Our program also includes Teen Speakers who tell their personal stories in their schools and communities to encourage others to get help and Depression and Bipolar Wellness Guides for parents and teens. We appreciate your help in letting your community know about our program.
We are grateful that the President has taken a strong position in addressing mental health issues in our country and we are eager to provide education that enables families and teachers to recognize and manage depression and bipolar disorder.
