Coping after suicide
We are developing the Coping After Suicide project, to help people like us
who have lost someone to suicide, cope with the loss and look for
depressive disorders in their other family members. We need your helping
in funding this initiative, and letting as many families as possible
know about it.
As we know, 90% of people who take their life have a mental illness,
usually a depressive disorder. And depression runs in families, like
mine. I lost my brother Mark to suicide, then helped my father get
diagnosed with depression.
By reaching the families who have lost a loved one to suicide, we can
potentially prevent more suicides. A family that is able to find
guidance and a framework for coping with the aftermath of a suicide may
also become sufficiently aware and vigilant to identify undiagnosed or
misdiagnosed depression and help prevent another loved one from ending
his or her life.
The Coping after Suicide project consists of the following:
- website section on depression and suicide
- Memorial web page
- Free Coping After Suicide brochure for support groups, bereavement counselors and downloadable from our site as a pdf
We need to raise funds to cover the cost of developing and promoting the
help to suicide support groups, funeral homes, bereavement centers,
pastoral counselors, health libraries, and members.
If you wish, we will list your loved one's name "In Loving Memory Of" with others on the memorial webpage.
We hope that you can help us with this important project to help people grieve, identify depression, and prevent suicides.
To make a gift, you can download the Coping After Suicide gift form, email info@familyaware.org, or call (781) 890-0220. Thanks for your help!
Best to you and your family,
